What is the Filament Weight Calculator?
The Filament Weight Calculator is a precision conversion tool that translates between filament mass (grams/kilograms) and physical spool length (meters/feet) using cross-sectional geometry and material densities.
Formula Used
• Cross-Sectional Area (mm²) = π × (Diameter / 2)²
• Volume per Meter (cm³/m) = Area (mm²) × 1,000 / 1,000 = Area / 100
• Weight per Meter (g/m) = Volume per Meter × Material Density (g/cm³)
• Total Length (m) = Total Weight (g) / Weight per Meter (g/m)
Real-World Example
For 1.75mm PLA (Density = 1.24 g/cm³):
• Radius = 0.875 mm -> Area = π × (0.875)² = 2.405 mm²
• Weight per meter = 2.405 × 1.24 / 100 = 2.982 g/m
• In 1,000g spool: Length = 1,000 / 2.982 = 335.3 meters.
Accuracy and Limitations
Calculations assume standard nominal 1.75mm diameter. Specialized filaments with carbon fiber or wood infills may have slightly modified density profiles.
Who It Is For
Makers checking if leftover spool length is sufficient for their next sliced print job.
