Staircase Ergonomics & Blondel's Comfort Formula
A well-designed staircase minimizes physical exertion and eliminates tripping hazards. In 1675, French architect François Blondel established the relationship between step rise (R) and tread going (T) based on the human walking step length (approx. 63 cm / 24.8 in):
2R + T = 600 mm to 640 mm (24" to 25")
When a staircase follows this ratio, climbing and descending feel natural without breaking human stride rhythm.

Carpenter Stringer Framing & Cut-List Guidelines
To frame structural 2x12 lumber stringers:
1. Lay out the framing square with the riser height on the tongue and tread depth on the body.
2. Deduct the thickness of the tread material from the bottom of the stringer to prevent a tall first step.
3. Verify the stringer throat (solid wood remaining under the notch) is at least 3.5 inches (90 mm) to withstand shear load.
4. Secure top plumb cuts to structural header joists using approved metal joist hangers or bearing ledgers.
